The best medical alert systems and home security systems have one thing in common – reliability. Both types of systems have to work no matter the emergency. Not a lot of companies offer both services. Bay Alarm does, but we had to ask the question: Is Bay Alarm spreading itself too thin? Can one company offer reliable service for homeowners and aging adults?

Our Bay Alarm Medical tests actually suggest that a company can – if it knows what it’s doing – use its two separate arms to provide both types of customers more options. For example, Bay Alarm’s home security experience led it to develop cellular-based medical alert equipment, unique in the industry.

We’ll get into all of Bay Alarm Medical’s strong points – and a few of the company’s weak points – as we go. We’ll tell you all the available options and exactly what you’ll pay for each one so you can make the best possible decision about whether or not this is the right system for you.

“In my experience, it’s what the medical alert device represents that can be threatening, scary, or intimidating to people: aging, the idea of infirmity, threats to independence, and slips and falls. Conversations about the adoption of a medical alert system (MAS) should be open, honest, allowing for discussion of any associated fears that might come with the MAS and/or what it represents. To a loved one, it might mean safety and peace of mind, but the intended user might feel annoyed or embarrassed by the MAS. Both parties are correct!” Read more about Christopher Norman →

Ordering Bay Alarm Medical Alert Systems

Buying Experience

Bay Alarm’s homepage tells you about its four systems right up front, and it provides handy pictures to give you a concrete sense of just what you get with each one. Even better, one click on those pictures brings up a full page explaining the system in detail. All companies should make their homepages that easy to navigate.

There’s absolutely no confusion about pricing either. Equipment prices are listed right up front, and there are no hidden charges. The prices for monthly plans are similarly laid out, and it’s easy to make choices about features like landline vs. cellular connectivity. (Hint: go with cellular if you can. Landline systems are cheaper, and some locations don’t offer cellular, but generally speaking, cellular systems are much more reliable.)

Bay Alarm device options

Bay Alarm device options

You’ll find that all of Bay Alarm’s systems come prepackaged. However, it’s relatively easy to add equipment and service once you’ve chosen your package and monitoring plan. We added fall detection, for instance, which cost us an extra $10 per month (that’s a pretty standard price across the industry). We also added wall-mounted emergency buttons. Here again, we had to pay a little more, but those buttons gave us the added security of knowing we could summon help from any room in the house. All these options are available under the “Add-ons” tab at checkout.

Pro Tip: If fall detection is a top priority for you, check out our guide to the best medical alert systems with fall detection. We encourage adding fall detection especially for older seniors or those with mobility issues who are more prone to accidental falls. And even if you don’t need it now, it’s nice to know that fall detection is available as an add-on if or when the time that you need it comes.

Installation Process

We should have guessed this from the purchasing process, but the installation process was equally as simple and easy. Bay Alarm takes the trouble to post several informative support videos on its website. Following these, we got the entire system set up in under two minutes. We had no problems getting our devices up and running. Studying and reviewing these products is our job, but even the least tech-savvy customers should be able to get their devices up and running without an issue. If you run into an issue, however, customer support can help.

Customer Support

Customer service seems like a dying art these days, but one of the nice things about Bay Alarm is that you can get help in a variety of ways. When we ran into a problem with our system’s base station, we pulled up Bay Alarm’s homepage, where there’s a handy Help section that includes a FAQ, Help Guides, and multiple instructional videos. We found exactly what we needed to solve our problem, but there was an email option as well had we needed more specific advice.

Bay Alarm also offers real-time in-person help through the phone. Just to be thorough, we called the number and spoke to a customer representative. She was friendly and polite and gave us the very same information we’d found online, which worked perfectly.

Packages and Pricing

As we hinted at before, Bay Alarm Medical offers four separate medical alert systems. Each one comes with its own set of options, creating many more possible setups.

Let’s start with Bay Alarm’s most basic system, the SOS Home system. In its simple configuration, this is a home-based system that relies on a traditional landline. However, you can also get the SOS Home as a cellular-based system. Monitoring costs a bit more, but both packages feature free equipment. Of course, you then have the option to add Fall Detection to either version. This is by far the most valuable of Bay Alarm’s several add-on options. Here’s a full breakdown of the SOS Home’s options:

  • The SOS Home Landline costs $24.95 per month
  • The SOS Home Cellular costs $29.95 per month
  • The SOS Home Cellular With Fall Detection costs $39.95 per month

If you spend significant time outside the house, Bay Alarm’s SOS Micro package might be a better fit. This system features a wearable emergency button that provides medical protection wherever you roam. Unlike the Home system, the SOS Micro requires you purchase the device, though it is reasonably priced at just $99. Here again, you can purchase this system in three different flavors, one of which is a hybrid Home and Micro system. All three include 24/7 professional monitoring.

  • SOS Micro costs $29.95 per month.
  • SOS Mobile with Fall Detection costs $39.95
  • The SOS Mobile 360 Bundle, which includes both the Home and Micro devices, costs $54.95

“I have had some caregivers that have used tracking capability to good effect to mobilize help from the medical alert system user’s local neighbors, which has avoided emergency personnel use and been better for everyone involved. Having caregiver tracking is most often beneficial as part of a comprehensive safety plan, not as an independent feature.”

The SOS All-In-One 2 is a hybrid system. It doesn’t come with a base station, but it does include lanyard emergency buttons you can wear around the house, so you’re protected just as you would be with an SOS Home system. It also includes the SOS Micro, so you get the benefits of mobile protection too.

In this case, you have two plan options.

  • The basic All-in-One 2 costs $34.95 per month.
  • The All-in-One 2 with Fall Detection costs $44.95 per month.

Finally, Bay Alarm offers a stylish SOS Smartwatch. The smartwatch offers the mobility of the Micro but adds features like a step tracker and a weather app and packages it all in a sleek high-tech design that conceals the fact that you’re using a medical alert system. The Smartwatch requires an initial investment of $199.99, but you can choose from multiple monthly plans.

  • The basic Smartwatch with monitoring costs $39.95.
  • Add Fall Detection to your Smartwatch and pay $49.95.
  • Add the SOS home monitoring system and pay $64.95.

During our tests, we found it much easier to get answers through the app than by dialing up customer service. Help guides are well-organized and cover every subject imaginable, or at least all the ones we could think up. Whether it’s questions about our equipment, making payments, or adjusting our plans, we prefer to have the information laid out in front of us on a screen. If you like a human voice, though, Bay Alarm has you covered.

Which Bay Alarm Medical Alert System Is Best for You?

We all want to save money, and medical alert systems are no exception. Keep in mind, though, value isn’t always about the raw numbers. Sure, price matters, but the most valuable system is the one that’s going to do what you need it to at the lowest price.

Which system is right for you, and thus, the best value, is going to depend on your specific situation. It’s important to think through exactly what medical alert systems accomplish and what they can do for you.

As a starting point, do you need an on-the-go system, or are you fine with an at-home system?

As their name implies, on-the-go medical alert systems are great for active people who are constantly getting out of the house. Whether you’re going to a nine-to-five job or taking a vacation, the mobile systems add the protections of an at-home alert system while you’re on the move. The mobile nature of the devices means they’ll work even if you’re in another state, since the hotline will patch you through to any available local emergency services. If that sounds like you, go with the SOS Mobile or SOS Smartwatch system.

When will an at-home system work better?

Since many (but not all) individuals who need medical alert systems are seniors, many people using the devices aren’t able to leave the house without assistance. If that’s the case for you, a home SOS system will be perfect. We recommend having a mobile medical alert option in case you need to leave your house, but a home system will keep a close watch on your daily activities and will be available to assist you during an emergency.

Pro Tip: Our medical alert system buying guide will tell you what you should be looking for in a device. If saving as much money as possible is your priority, skip ahead to our guide to the cheapest medical alert systems.

Bottom Line

When it comes to your health and the health of your loved ones, you want to make sure you do your due diligence. Medical alert systems are supposed to provide seniors with life-saving care in the event of an emergency. It’s crucial you pick the right company. And while no company is right for everyone, on the big issues, Bay Alarm Medical gets everything right.

Bay Alarm’s equipment is well-built and reliable. Plus, you can trust its monitoring program. In our extensive reviews of the SOS Home, SOS Mobile, SOS All-In-One, and SOS Smartwatch systems, we found that all four offer safety and peace of mind. In addition, the company makes it easy for seniors and family members to sign up for plans, with a well-designed website and intuitive app.

Add extras like an affordable price and the option to choose on-the-go or in-home systems, and it’s clear that Bay Alarm is a system you can trust, not just to do its job but to take care of you and your loved ones.

Bay Alarm Medical FAQs

  • What cell service does Bay Alarm Medical use?

Bay Alarm Medical is powered by 4G LTE cellular data. Depending on your area, the watch runs on either AT&T or Verizon.

  • Is Bay Alarm Medical better than Medical Guardian?

That depends on what you’re looking for in a medical watch. The Bay Alarm Medical SOS Smartwatch has a simpler user interface and an easier learning curve. It’s also cheaper. The Medical Guardian smartwatch has more abilities for its wearers to play around with, including calendar alerts and messaging apps, and it has a tracking app that allows caregivers to track you.

  • How much does Bay Alarm Medical cost per month?

After the up-front fee of $159, you’ll pay $34.95 a month to continue using Bay Alarm Medical’s services. If you want the trusty fall detection with your watch, you’ll have to pay an extra $10 a month. That isn’t bad, but we’d prefer it included with the monitoring fee.

  • Does Medicare cover Bay Alarm Medical?

No, Medicare usually doesn’t cover Bay Alarm Medical devices. Medicare generally doesn’t cover any medical alert systems, regardless of the company.

  • Is Bay Alarm Medical waterproof?

Yes, to a point. You probably wouldn’t want to take your SOS Smartwatch with you for a swim, but it offers protection from rainwater and you can use the device while showering, which is one of the times you need it most.
